MEMBRANE – 2014

Exploring materials existential place within the landscape, this project looks at tar and how the mass produced modern day form of bitumen in roads has somewhat disguised the once semi-precious traditional method of making pitch with pine. Tapping into themes of spirituality, craftsmanship and consumerism it acknowledges that modern day practices within our technologically augmented landscape aren’t necessarily beneficial to societies wellbeing and/or environmentally sustainable. Highlighting the whole process of producing an object by hand, the artefacts try to create from the one material (pine) a relationship not only with the landscape in which it was made but also to the landscape it has now become.
